Description
Chunks are a large version of our Sucre D’or, which is French for “sugar of gold.” Sucre D’or is often known by the name Althea. This candy is an old classic derived from bergamot oranges. For many, the taste will be familiar from Earl Grey tea or Althea candies. With its fruity citrus sweetness, it’s a candy many of us recognize from childhood visits to our grandparents, where it was the sweet treat on the coffee table. The name is commonly associated with “Althea” candies. Althea is a name the candies adopted during World War II when it was impossible to obtain bergamot oil. As an alternative, Althea oil, derived from the root of the hollyhock Althea officinalis, was used. After the war, bergamot oil became available again, but the “Althea” name remained in people’s memories.
