FAQ

How Are These Sweet Treats Actually Spelled in Danish?

At Sømods Bolcher, we spell it with ch, as it ties into our proud tradition and history. We’ve had this name since 1920 when the most common spelling for the candy was bolche.

However, the correct spelling today is bolsjer. In 2001, the spelling with ch was removed from the official Danish spelling dictionary.

As a fun fact, the word bolsje is believed to have entered the Danish language from the Low German word boltje, meaning “little ball.” Others suggest it came to Denmark with Tsar Peter the Great in 1716, when, while passing through Copenhagen, he was given a bolche and reportedly exclaimed более (sounding like Bolsje), which in Russian means “More.”

What is the “King of Denmark” Candy?

The most famous candy in Denmark is arguably the “King of Denmark.” This red candy with its characteristic flavour is, of course, part of Sømods Bolcher’s traditional range. It is named after King Christian V (King of Denmark from 1670–1699), who was given the candy as a remedy for stomach aches.

What does the “King of Denmark” taste like?

The “King of Denmark” candy has the flavour of star anise. In the 17th century, anise oil was a popular remedy for digestive issues.

The History of the “King of Denmark” Candy

The story behind the creation of this candy dates back to King Christian V of Denmark. Suffering from stomach pain, the king summoned his royal physician for a cure. At the time, anise oil was the go-to remedy for digestive issues, but its strong taste made the king refuse to take it.

Thinking creatively, the physician recalled an apothecary practice of mixing medicine into a sugar mass to make it more palatable. He prepared a warm sugar mixture, blending in anise oil and beetroot juice to give it a rich red colour. The result was a batch of fine red candies that the king happily ate—curing his stomach ache in the process.

Ever since, the “King of Denmark” candy has remained a beloved treat.
