The Scout Candy Set<\/em> got its name because salty licorice is often associated with scouts \u2013 but don\u2019t worry, you don\u2019t have to be a scout to enjoy it. This set is for everyone who loves licorice!<\/p>\n

\n

Where does licorice come from?<\/h3>\n

Licorice root is the dried root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra<\/em> plant, which grows wild and is cultivated in the Mediterranean region, Iran, Russia, Turkey, and China. The root grows down to about one meter deep, and it must be at least three years old before it can be harvested.<\/p>\n

The entire plant smells and tastes of licorice due to its content of potassium and calcium salts of glycyrrhizic acid. These glycosides are about 50 times sweeter than cane sugar. The plant also contains other aromatic compounds such as anethole and geraniol, which contribute to its distinctive flavor.<\/p>\n

Licorice extract is commonly used in candy production, but at S\u00f8mods Bolcher<\/strong> we use pure licorice root to craft our candies.<\/p>\n

What about salty licorice?<\/h3>\n

Salty licorice is made by adding ammonium chloride \u2013 better known as salmiak (from the Latin \u201csal ammoniacum\u201d<\/em>). This type of licorice is unique to only a small part of the world, where it has become part of the cultural taste tradition. It is especially popular in Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, northern Germany, the Netherlands, and the Baltic countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
