The pineapple (Ananas comosus<\/em>) originally comes from Brazil, where it was cultivated long before Europeans arrived in South America. The fruit was first brought to Europe by Christopher Columbus in 1493, and the name “ananas” comes from the indigenous peoples’ word meaning “the incomparable fruit”.<\/p>\n During the 1970s, an extra-sweet pineapple variety was developed in Hawaii. This particular variety inspired the natural pineapple flavour that S\u00f8mods Bolcher has used ever since. As a result, our Pineapple Candies have delighted customers for decades and remain one of our most popular fruit varieties.<\/p>\n Every batch of our handmade candies begins with approximately 20 kg of pure pearl sugar, which is boiled to almost 180\u00b0C.<\/p>\n Natural colouring is then added to the molten sugar, before a small portion is set aside to create the distinctive red stripes. The remaining sugar mass is flavoured with natural pineapple flavouring.<\/p>\n The sugar is then pulled on a traditional candy hook. As air is worked into the mixture, the colour changes from deep red to a beautiful pale pink. At the same time, the flavour becomes smoother and more delicate.<\/p>\n Finally, the red sugar strands are stretched and wrapped around the pale pink candy mass, creating the classic red stripes.<\/p>\n The candy is then pulled into long ropes and cut using our hand-operated candy-cutting machine \u2013 a faithful replica of an original machine that is almost 80 years old.
